mubarak have called for one million egyptians to join force in protest today against their leader and as egyptians take to the streets, americans continue to flow out of the country. john ray from our english broadcast partner, itn, has the latest from cairo this morning. john, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you. a morning here that could be make or break for president mubarak. overnight in liberation square, tahrir square, the numbers swelling this morning. i'm looking down from our office here, and i see a steady stream of people heading up to joinç e protest. we have said all along here that if president mubarak loses the army, then he loses the presidency, and that's why this statement from the army overnight, it's just so significant. not so much that we will mark people marching today, month one expects them to do that, but the fact is, and i quote, "we recognize the legitimacy of your demands." that comes close to taking

sides. the army splintering away from the president. that doesn't mean, however, it's going to be easy for people taking to the streets today. there are roadblocks around the city center. we're told that the security forces are trying their best to stop people coming in. then, of course, there are the police. as we know, they are quite capable of using very fearsome and lethal force here. >> john, thanks so much. a staggering swath of the nation is under one kind of weather emergency or another this morning as a colossal storm carves a path from colorado to the east coast. forecasters are calling for heavy snow, ice, and bitter cold from this potentially record-breaking storm, forcing as much as one-third of the country to brace for the worst. curt gregory has our report. >> reporter: mother nature's icy grip being felt already in the rockies and great plains. a massive winter storm bearing

down on a huge geographic area. 33 states have issued winter storm and blizzard watches or warnings. >> there are a lot of adjectives being tossed around. disaster is one of them. crippling. catastrophic. >> this storm is expected to drop more than a foot of snow across a stretch of 2,100 miles. roads already treacherous in minnesota. kansas opening national guard armories to serve as shelters. >> their airport is closed at 6:00. >> reporter: chicago bracing for its worst storm since the blizzard of 1967. up to two feet of snow expected. >> in time we may potentially be dealing with a storm of historic proportions. >> reporter: the other major concern is ice. the weather channel is forecasting heavy ice. an inch or more stretching along a 1,500 mile line from central missouri to central ohio. >> an inch of ice accumulation would weight down power lines. perhaps even break power lines.

we're talking about trees down on power lines. perhaps trees down on homes. >> reporter: widespread power outages are expected. winter's fury continues. with no end in sight. curt gregory, nbc news. nbc news meteorologist bill karins is tracking this monster winter storm for us. where does it stand? >> we had thunder snow in albuquerque and now it's snowing hard in dallas, texas. that's where they're preparing for the super bowl. that just indicates how intense it is. the blizzard conditions are now in oklahoma city, and they're extending here up to st. louis. we have blizzard warnings from st. louis to des moines. chicago to detroit. also they mentioned that ice storm around indianapolis. total snowfall, one to two feet from oklahoma right up interstate 44 into st. louis. new england will also get it. not new york city or d.c., but mostly northern new england this time, lynn, and this is just going to be a historic storm for so many areas, and travel and

airlines, good luck in those areas. >> a nightmare. of course, bill, we'll check in in a few minutes. first, the justice department says it will appeal a florida judge's ruling declaring the obama administration's health care overhaul unconstitutional. in a sweeping decision yesterday judge roger vincent shot down the plan saying the government would be violating americans' rights by forcing them to buy health insurance or pay a penalty. the white house called the ruling in a health care challenge by 26 of the 50 states a "plain case of judicial overreaching." the case appears destined to be heard by the supreme court. now here's a look at some other stories making news early today in america. in new jersey trafficç screech to a halt where a small plane made an emergency landing on busy interstate 80. a fuel line malfunction forced the pilot to put the aircraft down before he could reach a meesh airport. traffic returned to normal after the plane was towed away. for one there was injured,

thankfully. in north carolina fists were flying during a basketball game. a father, daughter, and mother mixed it up with school officials and police after an argument escalated into a full scale brawl. the incident began when officials asked the female student to change her seat. her mother and father objected, and shortly after punches were thrown. police stepped in and arrested the father. charges against him are unknown at this time. and, finally, in kansas icy roads led to a nasty spill. road conditions caused the tractor-trailer loaded with pork to roll over on its side and then mounds of the stuff littered the highway. before crews arrived and cleaned it up, they salvaged what they could. now for a look at your national and regional weather. here once again is nbc meteorologist bill karins with the weather channel forecast. almost as disgusting as your forecast trying to salvage pork from the side of the road, but, anyway -- >> especially the way they were pulling the pork. you missed that.

you cook. pulled pork. >> yeah, okay. i knew that was coming. there had to be a bad joke in the show somewhere. >> a lot of them with that one. let's talk about what's happening out west. all the bad weather is in the middle of the country, but some of that cold air that is coming in behind the storm is trying to creep through the northern rockies, so it's a lot colder this morning in areas of northern idaho, also extreme portions of eastern washington state. high pressure is protecting you, though, on the california coast. you can see minus 14 right now. this is a temperature in billings, and some of the cold air coming into boise and salt lake city. seattle, you're at 34 this morning. with sunshine, a typical winter day for you, much of southern california is cooler than last week, but you're still sunny and dry. that's a quick looktaff, cold, .

bankers. the u.s. ambassador to china john huntsman is resigning his post ahead of what washington insiders suspect will be a republican run for president in 2012. in a letter to president obama yesterday the former governor of utah said he is planning to leave by the end of april. a japanese volcano that roared back to life last week had its biggest explosion yet today, shooting out plumes of gas, boulders, and ash, and breaking windows five miles away. no serious injuries have been reported, but officials are recallinging more than 1,000 nearby residents to evacuate. and visitors to washington's library of congress will soon be able to visit and view the first u.s. map printed in north america. created in the 1847, it's the first map made after the american revolution, the first map copyrighted and the first one to feature the american flag. the dow opens at 11,891. the nasdaq rose 13.

taking a look at overseas trading this morning, in tokyo the nikkei was up 36 points, while in hong kong the hang seng climbed 35. stocks wrapped up the first month of the year on an upswing, despite worries that the & deepening crisis in egypt could undermine global oil supplies. fears the uprising could spread or disrupt deliveries in the oil-rich region fueled the run-up in oil prices. crude shot up 3% to settle above $92 a barrel. exxonmobil added 2% and spurred energy stocks thanks to its most profitable quarter in more than two years. aluminum giant alcoa led the dow, adding nearly 3% after snapping up an aerospace fastener business for $240 million. massey energy, the coal producer at the center of last year's mining disaster, soared 10% on news of a $7 billion buy-out by alpha natural resources. the dow notched its best january since 1997, thanks, in

part, to a report that consumers spent more than expected in december. on tap today fresh auto sales figures, manufacturing data, and more earnings. embattled automaker, chrysler, predicts it will return to profit this year after reporting it lost less money last quarter than the previous year. tech bellweather, intel, cut its short-term revenue outlook to account for the cost of correcting a design flaw in one of its chips. and facebook may have started out as a campus-based social network, but a surprising new study claims women over 40 tend to have up to four times as many facebook friends as their kids. all those high school sweet hearts, i guess. well, coming up, carm elo shows the nets what could have been, and one step closer to the big game in dallas. plus, salt in the wounds. lebron rubs it in against his former team. the early morning sports headlines are straight ahead. our february blizzard continues.

good morning. if you are just waking up, this is "early today." in sports no matter who you root for in the nba, you had to feel bad for cleveland when they lost lebron james, though no one had

any idea it would turn out this bad for the cavs. here's fred roggin with an early look at your sports headlines. >> last year the cleveland calf leerz, the first team to win 40 games. this season the first team to lose 40. lebron james had a hand in both milestones. drove by everybody in the second. the cavs could not stop lebron or dwyane wade, but nen again, the cavs haven't stopped anybody this year. wade had a game high 34. after losing lebron, you knew cleveland was going to be bad, but not this bad. they dropped 21 straight. 117-90, the heat won. two weeks after saying carmello said he didn't want to play in new jersey, he dropped 27 on them. devon harris, a passing machine. dished out a career high 18 assists. knelts won 115-95. magic and grizzlies pick it up. mike conley. the grizzlies up 98-96. final seconds, magic down three. jason richardson threw one up from somewhere near graceland. returned to center.
